International Co-operation in the EU Research Agenda:

Future orientations and perspectives for the African, Asian and Latin American Research Community

27 Jan 2011, Brussels, Belgium

Aims of the conference

This conference aims to broaden the consultation base and bring to the discussion table AAL research players, acting as a platform from which to voice their interests and concerns so that the FP8 may meaningfully reflect these interests and improve the overall implementation and impact of the Union's research agenda and therefore also, its longer term strategy for the coming decade, set down in its EU 2020 Strategy.

Morning session

The morning session will address the general theme of the future orientations and perspectives of international co-operation in research under the FP7 in a first session, bringing in general comments from EU and International Financial Institutions. The panellists from the EU institutions will briefly introduce or comment on:

  - lessons learned under the current PF7 in terms of international co-operation

  - the policy re-orientations anticipated or under consideration for the FP8

  - evolutions in funding allocations to the international co-operation dimension

    of EU research policy

Afternoon session

The afternoon session will consist of four separate thematic working groups focusing on current  issues arising the fields of biotechnology, energy, the environment and nanotechnology.  Each session will be chaired by researchers with experience of EU research projects and funding, and will follow a flexible format allowing for the sharing of comment, ideas and suggestions by the participants.

Conclusions

The proceedings will close with the Chairs of each thematic session presenting their conclusions to the conference, and a question and answer session.  The Conference Proceedings will be drawn up as a basis for the further elaboration of AAL input into EU consultations on the future orientations and perspectives under the 8th Framework Programme, and other relevant EU initiatives of concern to AAL country research.

ECRAAL is non-profit membership organisation that provides a platform for the engagement of AAL country research intensive industries and bodies in EU research policy and funding.  We are based at Rond Point Schuman, at the heart of the European Institutions.

Guiding the creation of ECRAAL is our commitment to engaging and fostering the participation of AAL country research players in EU research and development and training programmes. This includes assisting in raising both their awareness and take-up of the international co-operation potential available to them under the full breadth of relevant EU funding instruments.
